How do I choose the best investment.

What is investing?

Firstly let's ask ourselves, What is not investing? - Buying cars, mobile phones, Tv's, etc are not forms of investing because all these things lose value with use and time.
Investing is "The process of laying out money now to receive a profit in the future".- ( Warren Buffet)
Investing is also about making priorities for your money.  We, therefore, must plan our finances carefully so that we won't need to be stressed when you or a family member falls ill. Spending is easy and we often like to spoil ourselves to certain luxuries but we need not be careless and still must put away a small portion of that money which will be of good use later when you either retire or have an emergency. There are many reasons for wanting to invest and the main reason is to grow your money. We want to live a better life and the only possible way is to start an investment.

When it comes to investing, there are many options available. You need to be smart and research the ones you are interested in. This way you can determine the best investment source that fits in with your requirement or goals. You will need to decide if you want a long-term or short-term investment.  Short-term investments are safer and less volatile. You will have your funds when you need them. However, this can lead to lower returns. Whilst long-term investment yield higher returns but require years to mature. The main point of investing is the potential of turning profit. So when you decide on an investment, you must look at the potential involved.

So let's look at the types of investments available.

Investment types

There are many different types of investments such as stocks, bonds, ETFs, real estate, mutual funds, forex trading, binary trading, cryptocurrency.  Each of these investment types has its positives and negatives.

Example: mutual fund - who is managing the fund? What are the fees and expenses?. Are there any costs or penalties for accessing your money? These are the questions that should be answered before you start this type of investment.

Whilst there are no guarantees that you will make a profit. Some work on your part can make you a successful investor. Which route will you take as an investor?

Pick your investment type

Stocks - Investing in stocks has outperformed investing in bonds. In fact, investing in stocks has proven to be the best long-term investment. But there are several short-term investments that outperform investing in stocks.
Investing in stocks is rather complicated because there are many factors to look at and managing it takes time and patience. When you buy shares of a company’s stock, you own a piece of that company. Stocks come in a wide variety, and they often are described based on the company’s size, type, performance during market cycles and potential for short- and long-term growth. Your profits are determined by how the market values the asset you own the rights to. If you own shares in a specific company and that company posts a record profit, other investors are going to want to buy shares in that company too. Their demand for shares drives up the price, increasing your profit if you choose to sell those shares. So in order to make money from stocks, you will need to keep a close eye on market shares of that company and see when the best time will be to sell or even buy more shares to profit from the sale of the shares. If you plan to invest in a particular reason or goal. Then shares are not the way to go for you. It is more about investing your spare change and forgetting about it. Because you can never really tell whether you are going to make any profit within a certain time frame. Shares are also considered one of the riskiest types of investment.

Bonds - A bond is a loan an investor makes to an organization in exchange for interest payments over a specified term plus repayment of principal at the bond’s maturity date. The risks and returns vary widely between the different types of bonds, but overall, lending investments pose a lower risk and provide a lower return than ownership investments.
Your savings account: Even if you have nothing but a regular savings account, you can call yourself an investor. You are essentially lending money to the bank, which it will dole out in the form of loans. The return is currently quite low, but the risk is also next to nil because of the Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation (FDIC).

Property is also considered as a growth investment because the price of houses and other properties can rise substantially over a medium to long term period. However, just like shares, the property can also fall in value and carries the risk of losses. It is possible to invest directly by buying a property but also indirectly, through a property investment fund. This way you need to work for your profits. The property you buy may require additional repairs or renovations in order to turn a profit.

Retirement - Numerous types of investments come into play when saving for retirement and managing income once you retire. For saving, tax-advantaged retirement options such as a 401(k) or an IRA can be a smart choice. Managing retirement income may require moving out of certain investments and into ones that are better suited to a retirement lifestyle.

Gold or silver stocks allow you to invest in the Companies that mine these precious metals. They can often offer good yields, but they come with risks of market changes. But this, however, is not investing in the product directly. This is investing in companies that made gold their business.
